|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Afleet Alex | 20 | Buy - | September first week yearlings slipped by about 10% to $77k. The horse showed promise early, however the first two crops have not followed through quite as expected and currently the number of winners to starters ratio is dropping steadily measured against his peers. Send a mare that has a proper pastern angle, and not too long, as he can get a "soft" pastern. Have not given up on the horse and I believe that he is better than the numbers indicate. Needs to step it up, and soon. | |||
| After Market | 7.5 | Hold | Great pedigree; Exclusively American- raced turf only horses have not proved to be good sires in North America as a rule ( Kittens Joy about the best in 30 years ). | |||
| American Lion | 5 | Buy | Early maturing Tiznow "Type" with a handsome head, strong hip, good dense bone, and an easy classy way about him: Lovely horse all around and standing 16.2 h. The pedigree is strong enough and contains all the Northern Dancer even I could want. At the price an interesting horse for certain. | |||
| Any Given Saturday | 15 | Hold - | Now who would have thought this ! Last time I checked there is one repeat winner for this stallion. Jerry: "But how can that be ? Elaine: "Oh it be". | |||
| Aragorn | Sell | 91 foals first crop 2yo 2010. G1T winner - very well managed career but never defeated a really top horse; caught a fairly weak BC Mile. Sire line can hit from anywhere no doubt but not recommending this one. 32K Yearling Average. | ||||
| Arch | 30 | Buy ++ | Has picked up some steam again in GB and after Blame, etc., had a good showing in September where his Book 1-2 average was $144k. Commercially solid and fairly priced. Had a relatively quiet year overall compared to 2010 but firmly established in the marketplace and at 30k represents the best value of any top commercial sire in North America. | |||
| Archarcharch | 10 | Buy | Hot horse at the moment. Grade 1 winner a solid physical horse with size and is the sire's second best son at stud. Since Blame is 35k this is the source for Arch that we must look to so no doubt will serve a good solid book: Like Blame, inbred 4x4 to Northern Dancer. Would send a mare with some refinement, especially through the neck and if the mare adds another cross of Northern Dancer through a different son all the better. | |||
| Artie Schiller | 10 | Hold + | Siring primarily turf and all-wheather to date but an absolutely top-class miler and off to a respectable start at stud: Blingo has the look of a very good young gelding and has a big chance in a competitive Hollywood Futurity tomorrow. By El Prado, the Native Dancer "type" sire of Medaglia d'Oro and Kittens Joy, and has sired several stakes- caliber runners in two crops and they seem to be improving with maturity. | |||
| Awesome Again | 50 | yes | Hold + | September saw a resurgence in yearling prices of this wonderful stallion that had been declining commercially the last few years: Very simple - the individuals were good and had size. Interesting stallion in that nearly 100% of his major runners are complete outcrosses; and it isn't like, for example Successful Appeal, which has the same aspect but is not easy to form an inbreeding pattern with. |
||
| Badge Of Silver | 6 | Hold | Talented and versatile race-horse and a stallion with quality books early, and with a very solid syndicate of sophisticated breeders behind him provide this stallion with a strong foundation for success. The promise the horse showed over the winter has not materialized as yet and supporters a bit nervous. | |||
| Bellamy Road | 20 | Hold | There is Bernardini, War Front, with BM ranked high in the crop with superior runners, so I can see the logic in obtaining the horse. Several decent yearlings in July were not sold at a premium however a small number averaged close to 100k in September with 5 of 11 not sold. A second Graded Stakes winning filly at Saratoga again last year didn't seem to have any impact on "chatter". The fee is double what it should be right now. Time will certainly tell but supporters have to be nervous. |
|||
| Belong to Me | 5 | Hold | Good solid sire for years but in decline. | |||
| Bernardini | 150 | Buy +++ | Transmitting his class and would be very surprised if this horse does not dominate the sire standings within his crop and expect that he will be in the top twenty leading sires for years to come. Fairly low percentage of winners to starters but of those winners many are graded stake level. I think 100 would have been enough but breeders will pay it in spite of the fact that the weanlings just averaged about 1.5 times forward stud fee. These yearlings need to bring 450 to make this work since the mare going to the horse likely cost, or is worth, 600k - that is, of course, if the money matters to you. Bottom line: The highest caliber. | |||
| Big Brown | 35 | Buy | One loose shoe away from the Triple Crown and Horse Of The Decade and a Danzig line stallion with freaky ability when he was right. At stud, there was an unfair negative bias against this wonderful horse: BB seemed to lose his mental focus towards the end of his brief career. Have had a "Buy" on the horse from day 1. First yearlings sold extremely well for all the collective negativity surrounding this situation and breeders are singing a different tune now. |
|||
| Birdstone | 10 | Hold + | There is a misconception out there that he sires all smallish horses, and there are some that are, but no more than the average stallion. Very down years after 2009, but that was a tough act to follow. Upgraded just because he deserves it based on several very good horses that he has sired in a short time. Lovely balanced horse at 15.2. Yearlings averaged a respectable 61k but median told the tale at 20k. | |||
| Blame | 35 | Buy ++ | Sophisticated international pedigree, prototype 10 furlong physical, top class: Defeated Zenyata ( the great) fair and square in the most important race in North America. Completely Sound his entire career- hard to find that these days and something breeders should incorporate in their breeding programs since most in training are generally not sound for very long at this stage of the breed in North America. | |||
| Bluegrass Cat | 17.5 | Hold | Got no respect September 2010 where his average dropped 50% from 2009 to 62K and slipped again to 37k in September 2011. From a mating perspective I would send a mare with lots of scope and plenty of refinement and length through her neck. Off to New York in an arrangement initiated by Vinery. The horse has class and too early to make a judgement but will NY Breeders pay 17.5 for a stud fee ? Doubt it. | |||
| Bob and John | 7.5 | Hold | Big, imposing horse and well-connected. Have not seen enough to have a valid opinion but 43 averaged 31K which is a respectable showing and recent visit to Ocala has made me sit up and take serious notice. | |||
| Borrego | 2.5 | Sell | Strong start but now in a holding pattern; JC Gold Cup and Pacific Classic winner and a winner at two on dirt. Resemblance to Strike The Gold in color and marking doesn't inspire confidence and his top filly proving to be useful but not stakes class. |
|||
| Bring The Heat | Buy | What about this dude ! 8% SW, 1.43 AEI from a mare pool with 0.86 CI and a total of 52 named foals from 5 crops. Those are extraordinary numbers for another torch-bearer for In Excess and Grey Soverign. My motto is if there is Northern Dancer in the pedigree find more of it, and that is very true here. | ||||
| Broken Vow | 25 | Buy | Perennial top thirty sire. Yearlings averaged $49,000 in 2010, similar to 2009 proceeds but rebounded this year with 33 averaging 64k but with a median of 37k. Very solid middle- distance sire whose runners improve with age. | |||
| Brother Derek | 7.5 | Hold + | Very good physical horse, in perfect balance, extremely fast and getting nice foals. Many argue against male-tail inbreeding with this sire line, and the numbers have supported that thinking until recently although we are beginning to see flaws in that theory. Just a hunch that this horse will get runners although will have to do it without benefit of a pre-potent grand-sire or strong female tale pedigree. 15 first crop yearlings averaged 39k / median 35k. | |||
| Canadian Frontier | 3.5 | Buy | Standing in Louisiana in 2012. Six Stakes winners with three full crops to race: They seem to be getting better as four year olds. By Gone West, but much more a Bold Ruler type, to which he is inbred. Would use a tall mare - The horse stands over a good bit of ground but is slightly longer than he is tall. Very strong horse and has that extra something in his presence. Breed to race with the understanding that they may not be early or commercial. | |||
| Candy Ride | 50 | Yes | Buy + | Ranks third world-wide in cumulative A Index on Apex ratings behind only A.P. Indy and Dubawi. Strong showing on synthetics could be a function of where the connections race rather than an affinity for those surfaces. Twirling Candy and others have proved this I think. At 40k was the best value in USA in 2011. |
||
| Cape Blanco | 17.5 | Buy + | Galileo is the most dominant sire in modern history; stronger even than Sadlers Wells in his early days. It isn't as if there are no good sires in GB - in fact you could argue it is the best group of stallions working in modern times: 12 Grade 1 winners in 2011: 12 ! We finally have the opportunity to incorporate one of his best sons into the North American breed: Well-bred and with speed to win at 7 furlongs early; drug free. They will say," but he's all turf ": What he IS, is a thoroughbred. Name the two most successful stud managers in North American History since 1950: If you said Bull Hancock and John Gaines you would be right. Where did their most successful stallions come from ? GB and France. | |||
| City Zip | 20 | Yes | Hold | Tight book in 2011 where the LF price became the NG price ( 15 ). They are not tall and they do not sell nearly as well as they should although enjoyed his best year in the market 2011. Yearling and weanling averages in 2011 were 38K and 29k, respectively: Numbers don't work for me and sires smallish horses - that does not bother me but certainly has an effect on sales. |
||
| Closing Argument | 5 | Hold | Upgraded based on his performance over the last 6 months. 80 mares booked in 2011 up from 34 in 2010. Many winners including several stakes winners. Moderate race-horse but very useful sire. Continues to produce winners at major tracks and would not give up on this horse as a bread and butter type. | |||
| Colonel John | 15 | Yes | Buy | Siring leggy bays with quality and all stamped alike. CJ much like the sire: Handsome, tall , athletic looking and probably the best son of a top class sire; great value.; First crop should benefit from the parade of well- bred Tiznows soon to reach a racetrack near you. Tiznow's current 3 year olds bred on 30k fee. First crop weanlings led the division averaging $105,000. | ||
| Concord Point | 7.5 | Hold | Sired by Tapit, maybe the hottest sire in North America right now, and, that stallion's most accomplished son to date. Winner of a weak maiden race at two in his only start before taking the West Virginia and Iowa Derbies. There is no bigger fan than I of Hill N Dale Farm stallion management as they developed both Candy Ride and Medaglia d'Oro in recent years, but my initial reaction was negative. However, if they are nice foals they will sell well. | |||
| Congaree | Hold | Moved to NY and should do well there. Fairly solid performance so far. | ||||
| Congrats | 35 | Hold | Leading first crop sire last year and was quiet until recently for some time. Was impressed with the breeze-up juveniles and that made me reconsider the horse. Huge number bred in 2011. The market dictates the price but $20k was just about the limit for me here. Flatter (15k) has 230 starters to Congrats 124: Congrats 6 SW / 2 Graded / earnings $4.6mm;, Flatter 15 SW / 4 Graded / earnings $13.5mm. |
|||
| Corinthian | 17.5 | Buy | Have not been a fan since the first crop, which averaged close to 90k as yearlings, appeared on the scene. Now that the faithful have abandoned the wagon in record time, and contrarian that I am, have begun to take notice. He ranked 4th behind only Hardspun, Scat Daddy and Lawyer Ron in first crop sire earnings in 2011 and has maintained that position in 2012. Stakes production is slow to develop but would have to think at current market fees this could be a good gamble. They are not of a type which was my problem with the first crop yearlings - but the same could be said of Sky Mesa, a stallion that took 3 crops to get rolling. Certainly not lacking pedigree. |
|||
| Courageous Cat | 10 | Hold | Very fast consistent high class miler standing first year. Am not personally inclined to breed to horses raced exclusively in the USA and only on turf because of the fact that virtually none of them ever make it - Kittens Joy the first one in many decades to do so. No scientific explanation for this phenomenon. | |||
| Cowboy Cal | 7.5 | Hold | Giant's Causeway horse could really run. Very honest high-class miler was effective on synthetic and grass. Book Full in 2010 and could not argue with anyone who thinks he could be a sire. Solid pedigree. Could be commercial first crop. | |||
| Curlin | 40 | Hold + | Now who would have predicted that the Curlin yearlings would average more than his sire's yearlings ? How insane is that? The yearlings had size and were correct and athletic, although there was no particular type. Personally I preferred the bays to the chestnuts.. | |||
| Desert Party | 10 | Hold + | Attractive well-made son of pre-potent Street Cry and another with sprinting speed. This horse developed early and won the G2 Sanford which is the only reason that he is able to stand in Kentucky. Light on female pedigree. It is a good bet that one or more of these sons will make a sire, although would rank a few ahead of this nice horse to do so. | |||
| Discreet Cat | 12.5 | Buy +
|
Defeated Invasor in Dubai which says it all about his ability; equalled the track record in Cigar Mile; well- bred good physical horse had solid yearling numbers: Colts averaged 70k, fillies averaged 35k. Big move forward recently with several impressive maiden winners: One very good colt trained in Florida by Todd Pletcher looks to have a big future and today the G3 Sham goes to another colt by DC. | |||
| Discreetly Mine | 15 | Yes | Hold + | As a two year old at Saratoga this son of Mineshaft (Big Fan) appeared as an immature lightly furnished colt with one - dimensional blazing speed. At three a completely different racehorse showed up; this time bigger, stronger and focused on business. There is a good possibility that Discreetly Mine may have been compromised by running before he was physically ready at two and, if that is the case, you wonder how good he might have been. | ||
| Distorted Humor | 100 | Yes | Buy | Poised to possibly have the best year of an illustrious career in 2011 with several top colts on the scene. Top 20 world sire. Some issues in 2011 limiting his activity in the shed. | ||
| Divine Park | 10 | Buy | Chester House was one of the better sires in the world at the time of his death at an early age: 13% Stakes Winners from foals - a third of them Graded or Group winners, with a 2.22 AEI. Five September yearlings averaged $120,000. Overall average for 2011 was 61k with only 14 of 31 sold: That would mean that Airdrie is not afraid to race them. 2012 should be a very good year to use the horse based on a nice athletic group. |
|||
| Drosselmeyer | 17.5 | yes | yes
|
Buy | Ranked the highest weighted North American horse on the International Scale released recently but not an Eclipse finalist. Defeated Game On Dude each time they met including the Belmont and Classic. The $600,000 yearling is a slightly taller version of his sire and retired completely sound. Out of a top sprinter / miler and Santa Anita Oaks G1 winning dam, the horse is inbred 4x4 x5 to Northern Dancer through three different sons. Sharp mile winner at Churchill Downs at two attending the pace and had a good turn of foot from off the pace - a style the colt preferred.. Despite current opinions a review of Belmont Stakes winners that have become important sires is not only lengthy and impressive, it overshadows every other Classic and G1 Mile in North America in it's production of breed-shaping influences over the years: Most recently, Empire Maker (Belmont S. his best race) and Lemon Drop Kid (Belmont S. his best race). | |
| Dunkirk | 10 | Hold | He is a grand looking horse - he and Zensational the best physicals by Unbridled's Song that I have seen, although Old Fashioned could be counted there as well. The way people gravitate towards this sire line transcends reason as no son has made it yet ( over 150 mares 2010).. Huge upside: The first son that looks to be able to carry this Line forward wins the big lottery. Have seen several leggy foals that I like - very few of them gray. Close to 50 weanlings entered in November where they were not that warmly received.. | |||
| Dynaformer | 150 | Hold | Breeders may elect to pass through the shed once to give it a go with an early foaling or open mare. No harm in trying I suppose. | |||
| E Dubai | Hold | Moved to PA. | ||||
| Eddington | 5 | Hold | I suppose at 5k he is worth the money and they sold fairly well as yearlings in 2011 averaging $20k. They seem to have difficulty winning races against winners, a variable that I pay much more attention to than the number of maiden winners. However, Baffert's colt will be favored in the Juvenile Sprint November 4. | |||
| El Corredor | 10 | Hold | Not commercial any longer but a capable sire. | |||
| Eskendereya | 25 | Buy | "Lucky's" string of G1 wins and longer season won out as Champion Three year old in 2010. International Classifications had them even at 126, and it is perhaps splitting hairs but I believe that this colt was a pound the better. Word has it was not 100% for the Wood and still he delivered a top performance. I do like the horse very much but second crop not always the best time to use if selling foals. | |||
| Even The Score | 10 | Hold - | Decent start with one pretty good colt; ranks 6th in a super strong crop of sires. Appears to be going the way of previous sons of Unbridled's Song. | |||
| Elusive Quality | 50 | Buy | Great sire in my opinion, as only a select few sire horses better than themselves, and he has sired several. The individuals were not up to par in September where his average slipped under 100k. Commercially a tough call right now at 50k for some - but not for me. Arc day victory by Elusive Kate ( 70k Sept yearling) in the G1 Marcel Boussac confirms what we know : This stallion delivers top runners consistently. At some stage will decline and we try to stay ahead of those curves. Have to say that there is a subtle shift going on away from the horse commercially. | |||
| English Channel | 15 | Hold | Smart Strike Turf horse won $5M. Leans more toward his dam side in body type was effective from 8 to 12 furlongs. Top Class race horse. Yearlings averaged 35K but were spread throughout the book with many selling in last books. Turf only and improved as he got older - those types are a tough sell commercially in any market. | |||
| Exchange Rate | 25 | Buy | Has maintained a fairly strong commercial profile without ever producing a top horse but his stakes production has always been consistent. First Kentucky came out running with 3 Graded Stakes winners and several other SH to date. Strongest yearling sale in memory for him in 2011 with 34 sold averaging 70k and weanlings took it further in November averaging 85k. Part of the resurgence of Danzig in 2011. | |||
| First Defence | 7.5 | Hold | Not an Unbridled's Song physical type by any means. Have seen foals produced by Juddmont's higher quality mares and they are full of quality, leggy - first rate foals. Juddmonte supported this horse strongly in 2009 with many of their better mares. | |||
| First Samauri | 12.5 | Hold | Not looking promising but waiting to pass judgement until the second crop of three year old have run. Have to give him the benefit of the doubt but a tough time to use the horse. | |||
| Five Star Day | 2.5 | Sell | OK sire for regional racing program. | |||
| Flashy Bull | 10 | Buy | Stakes production not great but this popular son of Holy Bull gets a nice athletic horse with size and expect the stakes runners will surface over the coming year. | |||
| Flatter | 15 |
|
Buy ++ | March 2011 Post: "Popular sire will likely double in stud fee for 2012 after a series of graded stakes horses making their presence known in top company". Book Full. Has done it the hard way with both the quality and number of mares bred and expect an Arch style commercial move forward over next two years. Yearlings averaged over $50k in September: 10 times their stud fee. Flatter's Stakes Horse production is comparable to practically any stallion out there, and with better mares in the pipeline there is plenty of upside with this still relatively young horse.
|
||
| Flower Alley | 7.5 | Hold | Stuck with the horse for quite a while ................. Best son of a top sire needs one soon.
|
|||
| Freud | 10 | Hold | Best numbers in NY State - decent sire ; must use in that program soon to be enhanced by slots. Amazing APEX ratings with NYB program behind him. Good regional horse. | |||
| Forestry | 12.5 | Hold + | 2011 has been good to supporters finally coming up with another high profile colt and a strong supporting cast. Plenty of well-bred young horses produced on six figure stud fees out there. Ranks in top 15 on General Sire list and stallions in the 15 range are very scarce. | |||
| Fusaichi Pegasus | 15 | Hold | Please make certain that the prospective foal is inbred to Northern Dancer and then go racing. | |||
| Ghostzapper | 20 (16) | Buy + | Profile continues to rise, of late in particular, along with his percentage of runners and winners to foals which has increased dramatically over the last year. They are winning races at major tracks and are entered on Saturday afternoon every week - always a very good sign win or lose. I have to believe that it is just a matter of time before they are consistently winning graded stakes. At this point the horse should have produced a top horse based on the quality of mares and his connections but I remain a supporter.
|
|||
| Giant's Causeway | 85 | Buy + | While Danehill (Danzig) and Sadler's Wells influence continues on two other continents GC and Danzig are the prime source of Northern Dancer in North America, and with the success of Shamardal at 8 to 10 furlongs with 18 Group winners from 3 crops you have to keep a close eye on his sons.. Continues month after month proving his class in every division. Some overproduction in the past but as complete a sire as there is and deserving of the moniker "Great". | |||
| Girolamo | 15 | Buy + | Surprise and a brave move by Darley and one that should prove very popular in New York with Kentucky breeders shipping in to take advantage of the program: A son of A.P. Indy that had speed. Very dynamic physical horse with a top class pedigree. Would have been book full at 17.5 in Kentucky. | |||
| Grand Slam | 12 | Hold | $34,000 yearling average down 20% from a year ago. Useful sire that is very fair breeding value but losing commercial appeal. | |||
| Half Ours | Hold - | Attractive horse with speed at two. Probably Listed level as racehorse; good early reports on foals. 1st crop sold better as weanlings. Interesting Unbridled's Song ex Storm Cat mare with moderate family. | ||||
| Hard Spun | 40 | Buy ++ | The stallion with the best opportunity to carry Danzig forward in my opinion. Since Northern Dancer is just about all I want to use these days with both sire lines and broodmare male tail influences I have to be on board. The more Northern Dancer the better in my view and I say "rubbish" to those that worry about the over-use of inbreeding, particularly to this Line. Just as it was and is all Phalaris it will be all Northern Dancer or perhaps Northern Dancer / Native Dancer, soon enough ( 20 years maybe) and the breed is better for it. | |||
| Harlan's Holiday | 25 | Yes | Buy | Big move by WinStar buying enough shares in a friendly takeover to control the stallion in 2011. With two strong large books in the pipeline the reasoning must have been that the big horse will appear: The horse has certainly maintained a strong commercial profile with only Majesticperfection the single top-class horse. However, I have to stay with the" Buy", because they continue to show up in good company and his stakes production is good. 55 yearlings averaged 63k in 2011 - weakest results in some time. Remains popular with breeders. |
||
| Harlington | 7.5 | Buy + | September 26 Posting: 2012 will be a very good year to breed to Harlington. ( see "Scat Daddy" ). Yearlings are very much like the sire, which is all Unbridled, and have quality. Yearling Average in 2011 a respectable $35k. The horse had foot problems and trained in a bar shoe during his three year career - reason for only 9 starts. Very handsome tall horse with an enormous upside potential. | |||
| Hat Trick (JPN) | 15 | Hold + | Hong Kong Mile winner; very fast son of Sunday Silence and one of very few effective in top company at less than 10 furlongs ( usually they wanted 12 ). Has what has been widely regarded as the best colt in Europe for some time now - a fact confirmed on Arc Day. Out of a mare by Lost Code - a name we do not see often in important pedigrees but which was a very good colt in his day. I have ignored the horse and his foals for no other reason than he just did not fit the mold of Sunday Silence. However, a Champion two year old in England ( best racing in the world) and France can't be ignored. Guess I should get over there and see him. However, has only the one colt out there at this time. | |||
| Heatseeker | Yes | Hold | California bound. One of three top Giant's Causeway sons on dirt; Very good horse a little overlooked right now . Shamardal certainly getting it done and if Storm Cat is to carry on in NA it will be this strain. Luckily Danzig having a resurgence as well in NA. | |||
| Henny Hughes | 12.5 | Buy | In an effort to drive the car by looking forward instead of staring in the rear view mirror this would be one of my selections to move forward in next years auctions. The current crop of two year olds are outperforming the first crop as if they are by a different sire. Whatever the reason they have made an impact in the last several months. The record setter at Saratoga was the most impressive maiden winner that I have seen this year. Trend is up and although the distaff side of his pedigree is relatively weak the sire influences top and bottom are significant; including my old favorite Hagley. | |||
| Henrythenavigator | 25 | Hold + | 37 yearlings sold have averaged $105,000 - certainly a respectable showing at 3X's stud fee ( the old barometer for success). Top level miler with a very high class sophisticated pedigree: Inbred to aptly named Special - dam of Nureyev and dam of Sadlers Wells dam ( no accident this mating): Very Good Value. Breed a good strong mare with height and scope. Serious racehorse that matched Raven's Pass record pound for pound. Would be no surprise if he hits. | |||
| Hold Me Back | 6 | Hold | Giant's Causeway colt, winner of the G2 Lanes End and placed 2nd in the Travers is a full 16.3, well made, and very handsome. He is a shade long in his pasterns possibly attributable to his broodmare sire, but not upright - just something to consider when mating. Talented colt that will be priced at less than 7.5 which represents great value. | |||
| Include | 12.5 | Buy + | 14th Leading Sire 2011; obviously his best year in some time with seven SW's including a Grade 1 winner. If he continues on would expect the auction results to follow along. Sire Line needs this stallion. Maybe the most commercially under-appreciated stallion out there right now. | |||
| Indygo Shiner | 10 | Hold | First class pedigree and a nice physical horse. A Leading young sire in Argentina with the powerful Ciriani broodmare band supporting him. Very few stallions succeed on two hemispheres simultaneously. | |||
| Into Mischief | 7.5 | Hold | Nice offerings in July. Won a decent Grade 1 race at two and had genuine speed; interesting Harlan's Holiday horse worth following along. | |||
| Invasor | Sell | First crop that averaged nearly 100k as yearlings nowhere to be found at the moment. Absolutely Top Class racehorse - Argentina. One of very few links to Red God. 2011 Yearling average fell by two-thirds from 2010. | ||||
| Johar | 5 | Hold | As four years old there is improvement across the board - two turn grass looks like the ticket and so far fillies are performing better than colts but I like his steady rise - reminding me of Military in his production. Some class here and may get a good one. | |||
| Jump Start | 10 | Yes | Buy | Best year in memory and miles the best in PA and a great play to take advantage of a lucrative state breeding incentive. Will find out soon if the market makes them "commercial worthy"but my sense is that his star is rising in that regard. | ||
| Kitten's Joy | 50 | Buy | This is the first horse raced exclusively in North America on turf in decades to make a significant sire. Leading sire in his crop in 2011 and running close to Dubawi and Shamardal in world-wide cumulative earnings. If history is any barometer the fee will be set at $50,000 or thereabouts which makes it tough to use this fine horse which sires turf and polytrack runners only, albeit very high quality horses. Yearling averages are rising but not enough to support a fee higher than 35,000 in my view. That would be higher than Arch in 2011, for example. However, they are entered in practically every turf stake for two and three year olds in North America.
|
|||
| Kodiak Kowboy | 5 | Hold | Very fast and fair value at this number - expect him to be commercial if they look the part. Good move separating him from his sire last year. Voted Champion Sprinter with bias against West Coast horses ( Zensational was faster). Medium sized balanced horse not quite as popular as I had predicted. | |||
| Langfuhr | 15 | Hold | Good consistent sire and solid value; terrific choice to start out a young mare. Yearlings sold very poorly in 2010 but the physicals just were not there last year. Does tend to get plain workmanlike horses. Commercially neutral right now but the right physical still can make six figures. | |||
| Latent Heat | 8.5 | Yes | Buy | Moving forward again recently. Four yearlings offered in September averaged $87,000. The horse has a Listed SW and a Graded Stakes placed filly at Saratoga . Ten total winners, many placed juveniles at major racetracks around the county and in GB. This horse consistently delivers superior individuals with size and scope in each crop. Follow very closely. | ||
| Lewis Michael | 5 | Hold + | Important horse for the sire line; Fast and effective on all surfaces. Need to see foals. | |||
| Lemon Drop Kid | 35 | Yes | Buy | Nearly 10% SW from foals and sire of at least 6 Grade 1 winners. Can produce plain foals that often don't bring near what they should: Averaged only $62,000 in September 2009 up to 75K 2010 and made a good move forward this year where he ranked 22nd overall with a yearling average of $118k. Consistent sire. | ||
| Leroidesanimaux | Hold | October 24 Posting: "Animal Kingdom ( 2 yr old winner at Keeneland ) certainly looks like a colt with a big future. " Fourteen yearlings were offered and sold for an average of $43k with a median of 18k. Fourth Leading 3rd crop sire not getting any respect and standing in Ocala will not help that fact.
|
||||
| Limehouse | 5 | Sell | 8 winners including SW at Keenaland and Woodbine. Would be the first son of Grand Slam to make it so proceed with caution. Moderate but useful pedigree. Yearling average fell in half to 17K. | |||
| Lonhro | 30 | Hold + | Great racehorse that was obviously sound and drug free, decent pedigree, and Leading Sire in Australia last year. But a close look reveals a horse that has first foals of 2005 and just 3 Grade 1 winners total and 12 Graded Stakes winners overall. Decent record, perhaps equivalent to a few solid $20 to 25k stallions here . The horse does rank very high in the Southern Hemisphere ABC Apex Ratings recently released by Bill Oppenheim, so across the board his progeny do perform well in terms of earnings. High number of sales yearlings in 2011 averaged about AUS120,000 with the highest price, a colt, AUS380,000 during his best year at stud. Again, good numbers but far from the second coming of Sir Tristam. Northern Dancer is basically what works with him as all 12 of his Graded Stakes winners from four full crops to race ( first foals 2005) are out of mares sired by progeny of the King: Danzig (Danehill) and Night Shift mostly but other sons have worked. In-breeding to Mr. Prospector has, for the most part, not worked. Lots of hype and stories and he is obviously a good sire; just don't see what all the fuss is about. |
|||
| Lookin At Lucky | 30 | Hold + | Very high class horse that was perhaps just over the top on form at BCup. Not perfect in front but a beautifully made horse and looking forward to seeing the first crop of foals in the Spring. |
|||
| Macho Uno | 15 | Hold | Champion 2YO sired G1 and Jim Dandy winner 1st crop. Inconsistency a concern but the quality is there and a commercial spark ready to flash at all times. Can get the big price at auction but 28 yearlings averaged just over two time stud fee in 2011. | |||
| Majesticperfection | 8.5 | Buy + | This horse was the most brilliant racehorse in memory; the last horse with this sort of speed was a Mr. Prospector colt called Rare Brick which I think went undefeated - however he was not a Grade 1 winner at Saratoga. Without question the top rated sprinter in North America in 2010 although a horse he absolutely dusted won out: Harlan's Holiday's best runner to date. Good physical horse; well- made, very handsome and a world class sprinter. Listed at 16.1. The pedigree may first appear to be "light", however this is another top horse and direct descendent of Pretty Polly, a Blue Hen on the level of La Troienne ( but with only 4 daughters) responsible for Breeders Cup winners, Derby and Oaks winners from England to Sidney, Tokyo to Capetown and back to Paris with Arc and Oaks winners. Important sires Luthier, Great Nephew, Brigadear Gerard and Old Triest all trace to the same source as well. Second year not always the best time to breed, commercially, but he should get early two year olds. Speed Kills.
|
|||
| Majestic Warrior | 15 | Hold | Foals averaged $33k ( colts 43k) - same crop averaged roughly 50k as yearlings.. One promising race in the Hopeful responsible for a seriously high purchase price at that time.. Big pedigree and certainly has a license to make it - toes in so careful there; although have not noticed that commercial killer in his foals. | |||
| Malibu Moon | 70 | Buy | Very commercial and having his best year. Had finally broken through to the top level with yearlings averaging 168K in 2010 up from low 90's in 2009. 40 yearlings averaged just 118k in 2011 in spite of the horse having a banner year on the racetrack. The numbers just do not support the increase unless you believe there is a more than equal chance of selling in the average minimum 200 plus range in 2014. | |||
| Medaglia D'Oro | 100 | Buy + | Suffering a fair bit from over-production with 116 yearlings offered, 85 sold for an average of $200k (two times current fee / bred on 40k fee) but one of the most promising young sires in the world. Highly ranked in many categories in an unusually strong class of five or six good stallions. Would use a nicely made 16 hand mare for the horse, avoiding the massive type. | |||
| Midnight Lute | 15 | Buy | A large number of first-crop yearlings sold very well in September ( 53 sold / $71k average). Magnificent physical. Sire line a concern of course and many think that a horse has to show his speed on the front end to have a chance to be a successful sire - not sure how that nonsense got started. A few of his races were more than memorable including the Forego in his final year racing - reminded me very much of Forego himself in that race going 7 furlongs - probably Forego's best distance believe it or not.
|
|||
| Midshipman | 12.5 | Hold + | Talented two year old by Unbridled Song ( so will no doubt be over-subscribed) which suffered the same fate as many other by this sire that were pushed too soon - difficult for owners / trainers to resist when they show such talent early but progeny of this sire should not be raced hard at two and three as they are slow to mature physically. | |||
| Mineshaft | 35 | Buy + | Close to book full. Prominent on the Leading Sire List once again in 2011 and In 2010, with about 40 fewer runners than Medaglia d'Oro ( for example), ranked 2 positions ahead of that 100k sire on the general sire list at 15th. After Dialed In and Nehro the horse should move into six figure yearling and foal averages in 2011 ( and he did: 114k with 16 of 21 sold). Fee is a bit steep and he fit so appropriately at the 25 level; the book may get tightened up as the fertility numbers were not up to par serving large books.
|
|||
| Misremembered | 7.5 | Buy + | One of several new sons of Candy Ride but this one a G1 winner and two turn Graded Stake winner on dirt. Physically very good with size and scope and good size feet which I think is important as most resemble the sire in that regard. At the price a very good buy. Flying a bit under the radar but this is the son of Candy Ride that I would be backing to make a sire. Not perfect in front but I am giving him a pass on that. | |||
| Mizzen Mast | 12.5 | Hold + | Big boost with Hollywood Derby result. According to management works best with feminine pretty types adding bone and scope to them.. Not too late for a commercial revival and a really handsome, classy horse. Large books last few years. | |||
| Monarchos | Hold | Breed to race sire; very fair fee. Useful and capable of producing a good one. | ||||
| More Than Ready | 60 | Yes | Buy | 2011 has been the most productive of an illustrious career. Book always tight for this turf-runner siring stallion.. Very strong in Australia where the fee is 100K. The live foal percentage actually rose to a respectable level after a few years in the low sixties which often happens with duel hemisphere stallions. One of the only sires in the world to match their accomplishments in the second hemisphere. | ||
| Munnings | 10 | Hold | Good to have a Speightstown to breed to and the horse was a very useful hard trying seven furlong specialist. Iconic "La Guriere" is a game changer and there she is, second dam: The female tail pedigree makes this more interesting than it may have been. |
|||
| North Light | 10 | Sell | Classic winner ( IR. St. Leger) and a Grade 3 filly in first crop; a fact which the market has determined is a fluke. Would have to follow the market on this. | |||
| Northern Afleet | 15 | Hold + | Solid value and a good choice for a young mare getting started or even a graded stakes producer at a more than reasonable fee. Breed to race certainly but as a commercial stallion it appears will never be recognized: That is the only reason for downgrade from "buy". |
|||
| Notional | 7.5 | Hold + | Foals that I have seen are top class including a homebred filly that I am excited about. Good physical horse, solid speed; interesting sire line. Like the horse and have supported him for three straight years and booked several clients mares to him again this year. Just have a hunch about this precocious son of In Excess which ran a Beyer 105 in his maiden win. Have noticed the In Excess in his foals which I like. | |||
| Offlee Wild | Hold - | Good start, and extremely popular last year at the price, but looking more like a Chapel Royal at this stage. | ||||
| Old Fashioned | 8 | Hold | Very attractive son of Unbridled's Song from the family of Mitterand and French Deputy. Won the Remsen, Rebel and Southwest and was considered a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby going into the Arkansas Derby - He made it further than most of these good USongs do and was injured during the running at odds-on; Had the look of a very high quality colt: Excellent value. Jury out on his pops as a sire of sires but money to be made early on with first crop - that was last year......... | |||
| Orientate | 7.5 | Sell | One or two colts away from move forward and they are showing up in Saturday races recently. Good value for a still relatively young stallion with several Grade 1 winners. Commercially a none-starter at the moment. | |||
| Pioneerof The Nile | 15 | Hold + | Grade 1 winner and so far the best son of a very high quality sire. Good showing in Derby and injured in Preakness. Solid book shaping up. There was a struggle to get to 120 in year one but he is a nice prospect that is commercially a non-issue for whatever reason. The sale of his sire leaves him out there without a net however I am hearing good things about the first crop of foals: Very good things..
|
|||
| Pleasantly Perfect | 10 | yes | Hold + | Breed to race, absolutely: Commercially irrelevant at the moment. They continue to improve with age, as did he, but apart from Shared Account practically no graded stakes activity and a very small 2nd crop is now at work. | ||
| Point Given | 20 | Hold | I noticed the stud fee but had an appointment on planet Earth so didn't think about it too much. | |||
| Pollard's Vision | 12.5 | yes | Hold - | Tough, strong well- made horse that has done well with moderate mares; Medium sized and the Northern Dancer shows in him. Interesting stallion at a fair price. Quiet advertising campaign not helping promote a new stallion with a probable Champion, 6 SW and 10 SH in first crop. | ||
| Political Force | 10 | Hold | Defeated G3 horses but in with a chance certainly; another in a long line of young Unbridled's Song stallions - surely one of them have to make it. (?). | |||
| Pomeroy | 10 | Hold | Was making a move forward over the winter in Florida but has not followed through at this point. Watching closely as this could be another Peace Rules. | |||
| Posse | 10 | Hold | Recently quiet although better quality large crops on the way and he could quickly take off again. In NY. | |||
| Proud Citizen | 7.5 | Hold | Leading crop sire with Eclipse winner first crop. Quiet but probably not for too long - strong crops on the way. Fair value. | |||
| Pulpit | 50 | Buy | Top sire. Commercial success. Always book full; sired current 1st and 2nd crop Leading Sires; Bold Ruler continues comeback primarily through him at the moment - strong influence and very good value at this level. | |||
| Pure Prize | 7.5 | Yes | Hold + | A buy at the price which is up from 2011 but perhaps not a commercial play. Has maintained very large crops right along so that may get him back in the game. The market is just ignoring the horse in their infinite wisdom; but why ? His AEI and APEX numbers are not good, they are more than good. Most stallions never sire a G1 winner - this horse has 6. | ||
| Quality Road | 35 | Hold + | You may be able to pick him apart on physical but there is no doubt that his frame served him well. Top-class race horse, top-class pedigree, top-class speed, and sired by a top-class stallion. His Donn was, for me, one of the two best performances of the last ten years (along with Midnight Lute's Forego). | |||
| Quiet American | 15 | Hold | Amazing stallion. | |||
| Ready's Image | Hold | Quality speed - only son available. Old pedigree light up close. Hard to recommend but speed is dangerous. | ||||
| Red Giant | 6 | Hold | World Record 10 F Turf and also won sprinting. By GC; great value at price; American bred and raced turf horses getting big chances at stud for the first time in a long while; very fairly priced. | |||
| Rock Hard Ten | 20 | Hold | Down but not out ! Prix Thomas Byron result has to be a plus and he does have that charisma necessary for a commercial move - one or two more good SW's would send things rocking but they better come along before summer. Looking more and more like turf only but much too early to make that call. Big beautiful top-class horse. Follow closely as this picture could change quickly. |
|||
| Rockport Harbor | 12.5 | Hold | Yearlings very well received. The fact that no son of Unbridled's Song has shown much so far is the main concern. Useful filly in California keeping things alive.
|
|||
| Roman Ruler | 15 | Yes | Buy + | Roman Ruler is the leading 3rd crop sire in cumulative progeny earnings in North America. Stakes production lagging but that could change very quickly. Sire of two Grade 1 winners in USA and one in Mexico. Over 100 foals from the best mares he has seen ($20,000 firm fee 2010) were born in 2011. Very good year to make an educated commercial gamble right here. The horse gets runners. |
||
| Scat Daddy | 17.5 | Buy ++ | OCTOBER 2010 POST: "2011 will be a very good year to breed to Scat Daddy". It is reasonable now to make a comparison to Kitten's Joy both in the quality of runners sired and in surface proclivities. At the same point in their respective careers, however, Scat Daddy is miles ahead of where Kitten"s Joy was after one crop, yet SD stands for $17,500. ( now 25k) and KJ stands for 50k: No knock against Kitten's Joy; simply pointing out a fact. |
|||
| Seeking the Dia | Hold | JPN raced Storm Cat. Family of Lyphard. | ||||
| Shakespeare | 10 | Hold + | Turf horse by Theatrical - very high quality racehorse moved from Kentucky after second seaso but coming back. Had speed, class and ability and seems to be passing that on - was impressed with several in Ocala earlier this year and they are running. Graded Stakes winner in New York recently had the owners re-thinking the banishment. What I should do is what the" Nick" Ratings do when a high profile horse wins: I should make the stallion a Buy ++ just like the nicking folks would do with a nick that was a "D" and make it an A++ overnight as I see them do all the time. You understand that whole scam by now; right ?
|
|||
| Sharp Humor | ||||||
| Sightseeing | 3.5 | Hold | Pulpit emerging as a strong Bold Ruler Line sire of sires with Tapit and Sky Mesa; Corinthian next possibility. Not yet a commercial property. | |||
| Silver Train | Hold - | Off to PA. Very light on damn side pedigree has always been a concern with this horse. Yearlings were not uniform in type but most were strong and will give him another year before passing any judgement. The graph trend is ascending some with winners but needs a nice horse soon. A single Graded 3 winner his best so far. | ||||
| Sky Mesa | 30 | Hold + | 29 yearlings averaged 74k - roughly twice stud fee which is not enough. Things have gone fairly quiet and the concern, commercially, is that with a very small crop ( and not his best physical group in my opinion) to follow that this good sire could lay dormant for some time to come. I happen to think that is very likely to happen but that won't keep me from recommending the horse; Leggy mares preferred. Four full crops running and in need of a major horse soon. 25 would be about right in 2012. |
|||
Smart Strike |
85 | Yes | Buy ++ | Top 20 world sire is really quite an amazing stallion. Book closed early at Farm last year. In the beauty contests held in 2011 this stallion's yearlings averaged $127,000.00 ; thats right, 127; less than his son Curlin: Figure that out. | ||
| Smarty Jones | 10 | Hold | Have to wait until the four year olds have run before passing judgement; especially with a Derby winner. Still plenty of room for improvement but starting to see them show up on Saturday afternoons: A good sign win or lose. Off to PA; a move that I cannot understand at a point where they are beginning to run; may prove to be useful and possibly more. Notice his position on Leading Sire List ? | |||
| Smoke Glacken | 10 | Hold | Breed to race at this stage, good sire; Very fair value. | |||
| Songandaprayer | Yes | Hold | I have been short this stallion for three years with a "sell" until six months ago and a "hold -" until today. However, the horse is enjoying his best run here the past year and when you are wrong you just have to own up. Upgraded now to hold and watching more closely. | |||
| Speightstown | 50 | Buy + | Yearlings again undervalued in 2011 ( 110k) as he does not generally get a tall yearling and that is what sells. The experts apparently have not quite figured out that bodies grow after the yearling sales and also fail to look at the numbers. From a commercial perspective cannot add the "+" until the market accepts yearlings that may only finish into 15.3 or 16 hands as mature horses. It is the stride length and overall strength and quality they should be thinking about more than height. Ranks 9th on the N. American General Sire list in spite of his leading earner at less than $200k. Bottom line: This horse gets a very high percentage of superior runners. | |||
| Spring At Last | 7.5 | Hold | Very good miler - solid sire line...and at WinStar, which, by their record, has to be a plus.. | |||
| Stephen Got Even | 7.5 | Hold | Upgraded based on excellent value as he can do what so many cannot - get you the big horse.; Maybe the market will reconsider and pay a fair price for a nice one - still a fairly young horse. Had the champion 2yo a few years ago and the best three year old in NA 2009. First Dude is fairly serious as well. Soundness is the issue with these, but it's always something - right ? | |||
| Stevie Wonder Boy | 5 | Buy | Sired the winner of the Mocassin Stakes at Hollywood and a second SW right on that one's heels- that should help but must overcome a slow start. Breeders Cup Juvenile winner and Champion 2YO in a good crop. The foals are big and may take a little time to come to hand. | |||
| Stormy Atlantic | 40 | Hold | Mainly Turf but strong sire with commercial appeal. Yearlings averaged only 57k: Still does not command the respect that he deserves as perennial top twenty sire but knees are often an issue with him. However, still capable of producing a 200k plus yearling. | |||
| Street Boss | 15 | Hold + | Quality Speed; from Street Cry on down - careful with knees. Books full first two years. Hearing and seeing good things from first crop which averaged 55k from 51 sold. | |||
| Street Cry | 150 | Buy + | Is demonstrating again recently that he is one of the highest-class sires in the world. Top 20 world sire leading the charge again with 2011 yearlings that averaged 361k in 2011, up about 50% from a year ago and 80% over two years. If you have a mare good enough to warrant a nomination, by all means, jump all over it. |
|||
| Street Hero | 5 | Hold | The sleeper in the line and very fairly priced based on his race record. Knees aren't perfect but much better than his sire's. Nice smooth horse. | |||
| Street Sense | 40 | Buy + | 42 first-crop yearlings averaged 139K after 9 weanlings averaged 149K in 2010: 2011 yearlings held steady which is a net decline v. the market rise but is testament to their physicals because he is off to a very slow start considering the quality and numbers out there. The yearlings again made a good impression in 2011: High quality, well-made, athletic horses with size that moved well -They are just too nice ( athletic) not to run. |
|||
| Stroll | 7.5 | Hold | Banished to Italy but back home in 2010 and ready to give it another go. High SW percentage from foals - nice play for an inexpensive mare. | |||
| Student Council | Hold | Commercial questions; surprise Pacific Classic winner by Kingmambo; see first foals. | ||||
| Summer Bird | 15 | Yes | Hold + | Champion 3 Year Old defeated Quality Road twice in Classic races (Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup). From the family of Tapit, Relaunch, Glitterman and Rubiano and a good physical horse. Now a WinStar venture. Handsome horse. | ||
| Successful Appeal | 12.5 | Buy | This stallion has proved time and again his consistency and versatility. Interesting to note that, except in a few cases, all his superior runners are complete out-crosses, proving, even in this age, that "Hybrid Vigor" is an approach that does work, although given his breeding he does out-cross with a large portion of the population. A little off the radar without a prominent runner but that will change. Send a mare good through her knees. |
|||
| Super Saver | 20 | Hold | Maria's Mon Derby winner set a stakes record winning the Iroquois at two. Physically the horse is outstanding: Bay, 16.1, and beautifully balanced - he is a rangy athletic type and not really typical of his sire or broodmare sire . Intelligent and well mannered, he is quite correct; he may step a shade base wide at a walk but that is certainly no reason to fault the horse. | |||
| Sydney's Candy | 17.5 | Hold | Another good son of Candy Ride to enter stud this year and blessed with world-class speed. Effective primarily on turf and did not retire on a high note: That and the fact that there are several similar sons out there make this commercially murky and my personal approach is to wait to see the foals by these stallions rather than to support them all early. | |||
| Tale of the Cat | 30 | Buy | Good value in the 30 range. Consistent sire with reliable commercial appeal; commercially continues to reward those that use him with 3 to 5 times stud fee. Had a solid yearling sale, especially at Keeneland where the individuals across the board were very good this year: 46 averaged 86K, up 33% from a year ago and the weanlings had an even better year. Built like a good sprinter at 15.3 h , the horse has extraordinary power in his shoulder and hind end, a straight hind leg and relatively long back: the boy is built for speed but they do go further. Solid, reliable and steady. | |||
Tapit
|
125 | Buy +++ | Has surpassed the amazing group of four in his class in most of the important categories with broodmares half the quality ( save Candy Ride) to work with. Yearlings were very togh to buy and the Book 1-2 average more than doubled from 2010 to over $250k. Remember, the horse has produced his current runners from very average mares and low stud fees.
|
|||
| Thunder Gulch | 10 | Hold | Made a mini-comeback in 2010. Solid enough record and has a loyal following with breeders; tough sell commercially, but like so many these days a good choice for breed- to- race breeders; all five of them. | |||
| Tiago | 5 | Sell | Not commercial for the U.S. but a very good G1 winning three year old that did not develop quite as well as expected as a mature horse. Half to Giacomo and another hope for the Ribot Line. Would not discourage horesmen that breed to race from breeding to this nice horse. | |||
| Tiznow | 75 | Yes | Buy +++ | In my mind the most important stallion in North America. Tiznow is the only top stallion that does not trace male tail to Phalaris and, as an added bonus, he is inbred to Northern Dancer ( the next Phalaris), an aspect that is hands down the most effective breeding pattern in producing top class horses in the world today. My choice, together with Tapit, to take over as the leading sires of this generation going forward. As stated, the weight of the Man O War line, the only sire line in NA that isn't Phalaris, solely on this stallion's shoulders and so far has been more than up to the challenge. The best bred crops are coming up now and it is encouraging that his first two important sons standing were so well received. The 2011 three year olds were bred at 30k. Book 1-2 yearling average was higher than Tapit at $275k. |
||
| Tizway | 25 | Buy | A beautifully made son of Tiznow: Very well balanced and a correct, smooth mover with good size. Was very impressed with the horse on recent inspection. No doubt Eclipse Champion older horse. | |||
| Tiz Wonderful | 12.5 | Hold | Strong interest in this attractive Tiznow "type" from breeders as he was once again book full in 2011l. The first crop sold fairly well but not as strong as predicted or perceived. Like the horse and believe that his sire could prove to be prepotent. Yearlings were well received. Overshadowed by Colonel John at the moment. |
|||
| Twirling Candy | 15 | Hold + | Very talented and fast son of Candy Ride was good on dirt: Top horse and very tough to catch when he was right. Have not yet seen the horse. | |||
| Unbridled Energy | Hold | Very much like his sire, physically. Not looking good but cannot pass judgement for at least 12 more months. | ||||
| Unbridled Song | 85 (76) | Hold + | We all know the deal: the sire can get you the Big horse and he is always in the top 30 general sire list. Strong resurgence in yearling sales over 2010 as the individuals were very strong. Have noticed that he is no longer dominating his mares and there are now just as many bays as greys; interesting. Down from "buy" only because he is getting on in age and just watching closely for any reversals in production. | |||
| Uncle Mo | 35 | Buy + | World of two year old talent and should be a commercial freight-train; overproduction could be an issue. Northern Dancer in the pedigree always invites me to look for more ND to inbreed with but that is a sire line that has not worked all that well with Indian Charlie in general.. | |||
| U S Ranger | 5 | Hold + | Was defeated only a neck in Europe's premier G1 sprint the July Cup and has Dynaformer close up in the pedigree. I see quite a bit of Red Ransom in this horse. Small number of weanlings sold extremely well in November ( several to GB ) and a few had a Danzig look. Very fast two year old - interesting. | |||
| War Chant | 10 | Hold | Solid enough for an international racing program - poor commercial play. | |||
| War Front | 60 | yes | Buy + | Have to like the horse but it has to be said that the yearlings, share, and season values have run a bit ahead of his accomplishments. | ||
| Warrior's Reward | 15 | Hold | Medaglia d'Oro's sole Grade 1 winning son is an interesting horse which ran amazing numbers on the sheets but just never seemed to be able to put a campaign together. He is a very big handsome horse and should be seriously considered; but maybe too big for some. | |||
| Wildcat Heir | Hold | Useful sire in winner production and they are competitive at a level - however only a single G3 winner in the Graded stake ranks. | ||||
| Yes It's True | 15 | Yes
|
Hold | Consistent in producing progeny earning millions each year; always top 30 NA. As handsome as any stallion standing. Very fairly priced. Falling from commercial relevance but can still produce a six figure yearling now and then. | ||
| Zensational | 20 | Yes Bonus 2011 |
Buy | Dominated his races in 2009 in three straight Grade 1 races; lost all chance in BC Sprint stumbling slightly from the rail at the start. The best pure sprinter from the entire Fappiano Line, in my opinion, and a superior physical horse. Needed to win the BC Sprint for Eclipse honors to overcome the East Coast Turf Writers Bias; but he was the best sprinter in 2009; everybody knows that. One of three talented and handsome sons currently running for the BIG lottery that goes to the first Unbridled's Song sired stallion to make it big. I have put my money on this one but weanling sales were not robust and that is a concern. |
